After graduating from Bath Spa University in 2015 with a Business Degree, I began my first full time position as an Accounts Administrator where I have enjoyed working within a small team. During the first year of my employment I wanted to further develop my knowledge and understanding of accountancy which led me to AAT and the distance learning course. At first, I was slightly apprehensive of undertaking a solo professional qualification, but with excellent support from my tutor and accountancy learning staff, it has helped build my confidence.
I have received great support from my employer which enabled me to take time away from work in order to take the exams. I managed to pass AAT Level 2 within 9 months and I obtained a very rewarding mark of 97% and a Distinction. This course has not just expanded my knowledge of accountancy and but also allowed me to undertake further responsibility in the workplace.
In Autumn 2017 I began AAT Level 3 in Accounting. As expected, I found this more demanding, however, the fantastic support from my tutor Pat helped me overcome the challenges I faced. After completing my first 2 Unit exams within Level 3, I frustratingly damaged a nerve in my arm, which resulted in me having to temporarily pause my studies. In addition to this, I also received news that my stepdad had been diagnosed with advanced cancer. I vividly remember the phone call with my tutor, when I informed her that I would have to put my studies on hold whilst I dealt with these personal matters, at that moment Pat provided me with incredible support and advice including explaining the options available to me. I will be forever grateful for her help! Considering I have never met Pat she has been very supportive and has guided me throughout, my tutor has always been there for me either via email or just a simple phone call away, she has guided me through my struggles. After resuming my studies and extending my course I was able to pass Level 3 with a Merit at 87%. Being within 3% of a distinction made me proud of my achievement, however, I don’t feel this would have been possible without my amazing, supportive and helpful tutor, family and friends.
I am now looking forward to starting Level 4 and learning more about what I enjoying doing every day within my job and extending my accountancy skills. With still a lot of learning ahead of me, each small step counts towards a successful career within Accountancy.
